Sponsorship Changes

May 31st, 2010

Bioweapon Race Fuels has terminated their agreement to participate in the 2010 racing season following the CCS Summit Round Memorial Day weekend due to financial reasons. My main sponsors: Jeff Atwell Racing (Team JAR), Markbilt Racebikes, Pit Bull, Sidi, Galfer, Jeff Kovack Photography, BG Oils, and vortex remain in full support for the remainder of the 2010 season.

Summit Point with CCS!!

May 30th, 2010

Summit Point!!!! What a wonderful weekend. I was back with my original support - Drew Harbuck (former multi-championship winning WERA Expert) and my friends. Morning practice was a little rough to start. I was having a very difficult time controlling the bike. Drew got with Hemmelsbach from Penske and they made some quick changes. I went out for my next practice and instantly went 2 seconds faster.... the bike felt amazing!! A few more tweaks and eeks - here is 2 more seconds. I was able to get into the 22s in practice, which was a litle discouraging considering I ran 118s last year at race pace and 120s during practice, but oh well. I figured come race time I'd be feeling more aggressive and pull those times down. Everyone seemed to be off except a select few (Bemisderfer ended up running 113.5 on Monday!!).

Sunday: Race Day 1

Saturday morning practice I was still running 122s.. I was hoping to get those times down, but just couldnt find any seconds... Race 1 was the GTU - it's a 25 minute timed race. I got a decent start, but got eaten alive in turn 1. I need to work on being more aggressive. I got toegther with Rachel and Todd and we battled the entire race. About 1/2 way through i stayed back and let them go at it a bit. It let me relax and save myself for the last few laps. There was no one in front or behind us within site so I had nothing to loose doing this... I passed Rachel in the 2nd to last lap, thinking it was the very last lap, but didnt see a white flag. I got Todd as well. I knew i had to keep them behind me, but Todd kept going ono the inside of me in 1. Sure enough he did, so I tried to go back up the inside in 2, but he closed the door. I hung back a little bit, knowing i was faster through 10. I got a good drive, but this time so did he so I didnt get him as soon as I had been the whole race. I passed him with about a 1/2 bike length between us at the line. It was fun battling the whole time because usually in the 25 minute races I just want it to be over. I have been too busy to do too much training lately, so I thought i would get fatigued but I think doing the 6 hour with Krystyna really helped out a lot.

Race 2 was the MiddleWeight Supersport. I was gridded on the second wave, row 5. It was the first row of the second wave. Todd was right next to me so I knew i had to get a good start and take off to keep him behind me. The green flag dropped and i got a killer start - only problem was that I was WAVE 2! I did my stop and go lap and ended up about a half lap behind everyone. I quickly got about 5 guys and passed them. At least I didnt finish last. It was my goal. I ended up 22nd. As it turns out, a bunch of people got confused when I went and also jumped the start. They did not do a stop and go lap so they lost 1 lap in the results.

Monday - Race Day 2:

Monday was HOT. A stagnant 95 or so degrees with no wind. I only had one race all day and it wasnt until race 12. I hung out for awhile and got to watch many of the races I normally dont get to see. It was fun cheering on the other racers as well. Race 12 was finally up and I was sweating my butt off. I was gridded up in Row 5 again. I got an OK start, but again wasnt agressive enough in turn 1 and fell back quite a bit. I battled with someone and Joe Messina the entire race. I got down to 121.05, still no where near where I wanted to be, but I ended up finishing between the two. It was fun as well.

Overall, it was an amazing weekend. I cannot thank Drew enough for the trackside support, wrenching, suspension tuning, tire changing, and cooking. I couldnt have asked for more! On top of that, Teri Gorrell took her personal rotors off her bike and shipped them to me to use for this round since mine got bent in transport in the Bioweapon Rig on the way to Miller. Totally badass thing to do! Jeff Atwell loaned me some warmers to use on top of his normal support, and Pirelli helped out with some tire changes. Bioweapon helped with part of the funding for entry fees. Thank you to those who stepped up to help make this round possible! Other sponsors that helped in this round thank you: Pit Bull, Galfer, Sidi, XES leathers, BG Oils, Team Promotion, and Vortex!

Between the races

May 7th, 2010

So you may wonder what it is exactly that I do between race weekends? I have always worked a regular 9-5, or 8-5 job but back in March got laid off, so I took my part time business (785graphics.com) full time. So far it's working out well! I'm able to have flexible hours and focus on training and then just shift my regular work day from 9-5 to whenever I can work. It turns out I work more hours in a day than the average person as I'm getting in about 12-14 now, but it doesnt feel like it when you're doing something you love!

Today's training entails White Clay mountain biking. It's in norhtern Delaware and it's basically high speed single track. It's not as physically intense as Wissahicken in Philly, but its faster; meaning I'm working on my reaction speeds etc. Andddddd - It's a heck of a lot of fun barreling down a mountain at 40mph hitting little jumps and soaring through the air. What a rush!

Race Day - NJMP with CCS

I was rather nervous as it was my first race on the Ducati as well as only my second expert race. Luckily, I have done a bunch of track days at Thunderbolt and know the track really well so that was not an issue. My first practice I ran 34s - I was ok with that for a morning session, but as it got hotter out, the bike felt completely different. Tire pressures remained perfect, but I could not get the bike to turn. My practice times increased to 36s and I was beginning to get worried about the race.

My first race was the GTU - a 25 minute endurance race. I was gridded up Row three left of 3 so I could get a great start. The green flag dropped and I did get a great start, but I couldnt make it stick. I went into turn 1 and was swarmed with angry motorcycles. Getting bumped left and right and just trying to keep my position in what was now 8th or 9th seemed hopeless. I got a bit overwhelmed as I'm still getting used to expert starts... turn 1 i came out about 10th, after the chicane i was in something like 15th.. It seemed like everytime someone would show me a wheel I would just let them through - almsot move over for them! Some thing I need to work on for sure! In lap 3 someone went on the inside of me, so i finally said NOPE and repassed him into 2 as he went too hot into 1 and almost went off track. As he was coming back on line he hit me HARD and the whole bike started to go out of control. I recovered but he got me back on the exit of 2. I did not have enough trust in the Ducati yet to make any risky moves and I was riding on the extremely safe side. After about 7 of the 14 laps I started to get realllyy tired. The Ducati is sooo much more difficult to throw around than the R6 and while it's great out of the corners, it doesnt have much top end, so I am not as relaxed on the straights and could not catch my breath. Training program is increased as well!

Sunday was a fresh start. My first race was the Pirelli Diable Challenge - not too many entries, but many of the guys in it are AMA so I knew it would be some tough competition. I was gridded up on row 4 and got a good start. Stayed with them for the first lap, but then started to fall back. It was only 10 laps and I managed to finish 9th.

Race 2 was the MW Supersport. I got a bad start and fell back pretty far finishing 26th overall - I believe there were 34 in the class so at least I wasnt last.

Race 3 was last in the day and it was cloudy out. I still had my dark visor on and was having trouble seeing, but it worked out for the better. I got a meh start and was in about 10th place when on lap one there was a nasty crash and a red flag. It was my chance to restart and start well. I got a good start and rode aggressively into turn 1, fending off as many guys as I could with my lap times still being high. It was a short, 5 lap race. I was waiting til the last lap to pass the guy in front of me, but there was no white flag so next thing I knew it was the checkered. It was okay though I finished 16th, which was a huge improvement from 26th! Now.. Markbilt is finishing up the R6 this weekend, so I will have my baby back to race on if needed. We'll just have to see how VIR track days go! Special Thank you to: Bioweapon Fuels, Mark Rozema of Markbilt Racebikes, Mike from Penske, Jeff at Arai, Chris at WFO, Todd from Heroic, Mikie Suh, my mom and dad, and Linda for track-side support, CCS for not hating me for running LW instead of MW femmoto, the corner workers for having my back, 785graphics.com for getting me there, XES leathers, Sidi Boots, Galfer Brakes, and OF COURSE - Nutella for fueling my breakfast!!

Next race: Miller Motorsports Park WERA National May 20-25!

Test and Tune

My first day on the Ducati was at an absolute track day sat and sun at NJMP. The bike felt great, but I was not able to get up to speed. We decided that the forks and rear shock need to be resprung for my weight. In the meantime, I learned how the bike put down power and how it reacted to the different ways of the track... The next track day was with TPM on the same course. Thanks to Chris as WFO and CTR suspension, and Mike from Penske Racing Shocks, we were able to get the Ktech front end on and the penske rear tuned for my weight. Mike was there helping me dial in the bike all day and I cannot describe how awesome that was! We got it to where I could run 34s without any trouble. On the R6 I was able to run 29s, so I was hoping come race day I would be able to put my head down and go a bit faster. We'll see what happens!

We'll be racing as many WERA and CCS events as possible as well as doing several test and tune track days to get the bike dialed in. Check back soon as I head out to a couple track days then race at NJMP!

Winter Training!

November 11, 2009

I keep getting questions on what I do to stay in shape during the off season... Besides riding anything and everything with a motor, I try to get out on the bicycle at least 4 days a week. It's a bummer that soon it will be too cold to be outside and I will have to resort to the trainer and spin class, but I can say that hands down cycling (Mountain AND Road) has made me a much stronger racer!
