Tank Tredz Review

October 11, 2009

I had the chance to try out a new tank grip... And was VERY happy with what I saw!

Everything with the Tank Tredz was great from start to finish. Installation was a snap. I just cleaned off the area I was going to apply the Tank Tredz, and slapped it on. I applied it on top of my TrackWraps and it stuck very well. The shape of the Tank Tredz was small enough that it allowed for some error if I got it on slightly wrong. It also came with a grip for my phone, which was quite an added bonus!

The Tank Tredz held up great so far, making it through 3 full rounds of WERA racing, 2 rain races, 2 track days and 2 "incidences" where I ended up on my butt. I was worried that it would start to pick up dirt and get discolored, but so far it still looks brand new - even after a lowside in the Georgia clay at Road Atlanta! I also really like the fact that it is clear because I can see right through it and it doesn't take away from the look of my wrapped bike like some other manufacturers do. The racers nearby me in the pits saw me install it before practice and said that they liked it as well. It's sticky enough to keep me from sliding around and keep me in place under heavy braking, but unobtrusive enough not to get in the way while I'm transitioning between corners. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Tank Tredz and recommend the kits to everyone in need of some extra grip! (see:BeaveRun T1 - about mid-corner bump!)

The WERA Grand National Finals

October 6-11, 2009

Now onto the weekend....

The weekend was going to be a long marathon of little sleep and I knew it, but I was so hyped up to have the opportunity to go to the GNF this year, I didn't care. We left work at 5pm Thursday and drove through the night to arrive at Road Atlanta Friday morning at 6:30. We set up camp and slept for 30 min before waking up and heading out to registration. Drew got the warmers going and gave the bike a once-over while I went out to reg a little early to get in line. Registration opened at 730, practice starts at 8 and I was the first group to go out. That means I had to register, tech, and gear up in a span of 30 minutes. The WERA folks did an awesome job, despite an accident blocking the road near the track. I was able to get everything done and even have 5 minutes to drink a water while I waited for 3rd call. The first practice was more of a sighting lap session than anything. It was cold and the track was really damp with puddles and standing water everywhere. I have only done about 8 laps on the track with the chicane and that was last year at the GNF on no sleep at all. I needed to go out at a slow pace and just get a good look-see at it. I did about 5 laps and came in as I had a few moments and didn't want to bin the bike in the first session. With having the stock harness on the bike with the addition of the kit ECU, the pit speed limter was kicking in on the straight while I was in 2nd gear. I rode around it for that session. I came in and called Mark Rozema of Markbilt Race Bikes and he knew exactly what was wrong, so he fixed it when he got there Saturday morning. .. The second session was much better, but still a little bit of water on the track so I couldnt really get up to speed everywhere. Friday was the endurance race and I was not competing in it this round, so I had time to clean up and take a nice long 4 hour nap during the race. Saturday was a much better practice. I went out and cruised around, working on my lines, testing out the suspension at a higher speed, and just getting a feel for what I needed to get done later in the races. The seond session of Saturday practice was a blast - Dale and I got together and did some fun laps, being rabbits for eachother and pulling down our times. It turns out we were only doing about 39s and needed to pull those times down a bit for the races, but I wasnt worried at all.

Women's Superstock

Normally, I don't have any competitors in WSS, but today I had 2. It was fun actually having other girls out on the grid, and I'm glad WERA allows this class, but I would be even more happy if more girls came out to compete. We were gridded up with Heavyweight Twins Expert. It was a fun race. I got to practice my starts, my passing, and play with the heavyweight guys a bit. I made it up to 2nd place in the HWT novice class, finishing 6th overall and lapping the girls that were on the grid with me.... so that was kinda neat.

Leading the C Superstock Race

Onto the "big boy" races.. C Superstock

C Superstock was THE race that I WAS going to win. No matter what. This was my one and only classes that I told myself I had better do well in. I started row 2 right of 2. Perfect for taking an inside line off the start. The green flag flew and I got a great start - going into turn 1 in third place. I kept on the rear of the 2 guys in front of me. Coming out of 7, the guy in 2nd pulled off on the straight. Seemed like a mechanical issue of some sort. I now had 1st place in my sights and I was on a mission. I passed him on the outside of the kink, setting him up for turn 10a. I got by and the pass stuck. I lead the race for the next 3 laps, on too much of an adrenaline rush to look at the wall and see any signals that Drew was giving me. I figured that the guy in 2nd was still right there and I took a defensive line in 10a, entering just as hot as I normally would, only this time I heard the bike rev, up, felt my left side hit the pavement and realized I was crashing. I pulled my arms in tight just as I hit the rumble strips and tumbled into the gravel trap. In one of the rolls, i saw the bike flip and hoped the damage wasnt too bad. I walked to the wall and tried to catch my breath. I could hear the announcer say that it was the halfway point and my heart sank knewing I had it. I had that win and I crashed right out of it. I realized that the corner workers were holding my bike upright for me at the top of the gravel trap and I ran over to it. The damage wasn't terrible. The left bar was bent pretty bad, the windshield shattered, and the master cyl reservoir broke off. The corner worker spun the bar up a bit so the clutch lever wasnt hitting the body work anymore and I rode it back into the pits. It was actually really difficult to ride because I couldnt really turn it and could barely reach the clutch lever, but I made it. I came in to find out that I had about a 20 bike lead. GRRRR. Drew immediately took the bike over to the hose and got it washed off. Mark went and found a master cyl reservoir since that was the only spare I didn't have. They got it all back together and Miki, my best friend who came to watch racing for the first time (she's a track day junkie) helped clean off my gear. Let me just say that this was the exact moment that I realized white leathers and Georgia clay DO NOT mix well together - needless to say, next year I will be needing a new suit for sure. I went and re-teched with Sean himself and got the OK to go back out for the rest of my races.

Falling down - turn 10a

C Superbike.. let's try this again

Now I knew I could do this - I knew I had it in me to get out there and compete with the best of the novice guys this year. I was gridded row 2 left this time - the outside line. I got a great start and got the holeshot, I lead through turn 1, but as I slowed for the chicane, I got passed. Now I was in 2nd and I was OK with that. I just had to hold onto first place. I did for about a lap or two, but then got passed and fell back to third. I watched 1st and 2nd battle it out, but just couldnt seem to get up there with those guys and show them a wheel at all. I fell about 2 turns back and crossed the finish line 8 seconds behind 1st. My goal for the weekend was to finish with all podiums, and I was keeping up with that. My times were also in the 1:36.8 range, so I only lost .1 seconds off my times when I fell down only an hour earlier.

Leading C Superstock

Sunday - 600 Superstock

We only got 1 practice in for Sunday so it was important that I get out there and work some things out. The suspension wasnt exactly where I wanted it, so after coming in we made some changes, hoping they were for the better. The 600 Superstock National class was first. I was gridded up on the 3rd row.. a good start was necessary. The green flag dropped and we screamed towards turn 1. I didnt get an awesome start, but it wasnt terrible either. I was 3rd entering turn 1. I quicky got passed and fell back to 4th by the second lap. I just wasnt feeling right. The bike kept wobbling mid-corner and was not stable at all. I got passed on lap 6 by Dale, who had recovered from a bad start, and I tried to hang onto him, but couldn't get the bike to settle down. I almost lost it in turn 6 when the front pushed hard, so I settled down and took 5th place.

Wheelie out of 10b

750 Superbike

I wanted a better finish. I needed podium. This was my last chance to get just that. I was gridded up row 8 right of two. The race was expert and novice combined without a wave start, so it was going to get interesting on lap 1. The green flag flew and I got a killer start - I was in the middle of the expert pack before I knew it, but unfortunetly many of them checked up in turn 1 and we all got lost in the scramble. I was in 3rd place now (for the novices) with about 5 or 6 experts seperating me from 1st and 2nd place. I caught 2nd in 2 laps - mainly in turn 6 and turn 1, where I'm strongest. I got the drive out of 7 and passed 2nd place, who was on a Ducati 1098R (I was on my Markbilt R6) and took 2nd place. First was no where to be seen now. I pushed hard and got around a few more experts, but could not find the guy in 1st. I came up on Alistair Douglas, who seemed to be off his usual pace. He turned around and saw me on the straight, he gave me a wave, but then put his head down and kept going hard. I hung with him, passing him at some point, then he passed me back into 6. I passed him out of 7 and he passed me back in 10a. It was great as he served as a good rabbit for me, pulling my times down to 1:36.4 - my previous best of the weekend was 1:36.7 in the C Superstock race when my tires were brand new. This was the same set of tires from Saturday's races so this was my 5th sprint on them, but they were suprizingly sticky. I dont think I slid the rear badly at all; other than coming down the hill in turn 12. I finished the race in 2nd in my class, and 8th overall. I was happy with that considering how old my tires were by then.

Overall, the weekend was amazing. It had it's ups and downs, but I pulled my times down immensly from last year (1:45.5 was my best at the GNF last year) and had the opportunity to work with a great crew chief and mechanic. I did crash, but in the end I didn't get hurt and the bike was okay. The Trackwraps held the body work together and I think saved it from cracking because it didnt flex as much as it would have normally. Mark did a fantastic job and worked with Drew well to make sure my bike and I were both in tip-top shape all weekend. I cannot thank them both enough. NOW.. onto the expert class next year.

Getting ready for the Grand National Finals

October 7, 2009

In preparation for the GNF coming up this weekend, I turned my bike over to the hands of Mark Rozema of Markbilt Race Bikes. The whole experience has been awesome. He's overhauled the bike from the ground up, making it into a race-ready machine. After being slightly made fun of for having heated grips on my racebike (what? my hands get cold!) I am going to pick it up and see it for the first time tonight! I am super excited first of all to see his magic work, and even more excited to RACE it!! It looks like it may be wet weather this weekend, but with all the help I have received so far from Mark and everyone around me, I know I'll be just fine!

Final Regional WERA Round - Nelson Ledges

September 26, 2009

2009 Championship Results and Nelson Ledges Round Results:

  • C Superstock 2009 Championship: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and North Central: 2nd place
  • C Superbike 2009 Championship: Northeast and Mid-Atlantic: 3rd place
  • Women's Superstock Mid-atlantic and Northeast: 1st place
  • Nelson Ledges Round: C Superstock: 3rd place
  • Nelson Ledges Round:C Superbike: 5th place

Nelson was yet another adventure! We broke down this time about an hour from the track, called AAA and got dropped off - van fully loaded. At least we had a place to sleep!! We headed out later than usual - Sat morning instead of Friday after work as I was not going to do the Solo. Nelson was one of my stronger tracks and I didnt need to spend the extra money on the entry fee, tires, fuel, etc. It ended up raining Saturday and no body in my class raced at all - not even one! That was the first time I have seen that happen. So we got there, ate a nice big dinner with our friends after we hit up the auto parts store and got to bed at a decent hour to rest up for Sunday's sprints.

Sunday's Sprints!

Sunday was one of those weather days where we couldnt figure out what was going to happen. We woke up to drizzle - track was soaked. I skipped out on the first practice as I wasn't quite sure what was going to happen and I didnt want to pay to have rains mounted up only to take them off again. It was still raining for the first half of the second round of practice so I got the rains put on, but I was the last group to go out - so of course it stopped raining and when i went out the track was starting to dry up. I got a few frustrating laps in and the bike felt terrible. It is so far off right now that I don't even know where to start turning knobs and clickers, so I just left it where it was for the race - at least there would be no surprises!

Race 1 was the C Superstock. I was leading the championship for Mid-Atlantic by 1 point, Dale right behind me... We gridded up and I was front row left - on the outside of turn 1. Dale was directly to my right and Garrett on the right of him. There was some tough competition and I knew I had to get a good start. The 1 board went sideways, flag dropped and before I knew it the bike was bogging terribly! All year and the one race that I really needed to get a good start and I messed it up. I went into turn 1 in about 8th place, quickly making up ground. My bike was all over the place in 4 and entering 1, which was upsetting as turn 1 is normaly my strongest part of the track by far. I just couldn't get the bike to settle before turning in, so i turned in every lap hoping that it would stick and getting on the gas as soon as possible to get the weight off the front. In 2 laps I caught up to the front pack - 1st through 3rd all battling it out. They were so close to eachother that I think they may have been slowing each other up. I made my move around the outside of 13 for 3rd place and closed in on 1st and 2nd. I followed for a half lap, noting where I could definitely make my move and get them both at once, but the rest of that lap was filled with yellow flags and bikes everywhere. We entered the carosel and I could see a bike in the middle of the track, spinning around with no apparent direction. We all tucked to the inside exiting the carosel and missing the riderless bike. I remember thinking "Welcome to the meat grinder class!" there were guys off in 13, 4, and now the carosel! We made it through the kink and were about to enter turn 13 when the red flag flew. End of the race as we just saw the halfway flag. I was rather bummed out. My entire season, all my energy, all my funds, all my effort given to get this championship and to loose it by 1 point, 4 laps short with extremely high chances of making an epic recovery... A second is okay - I will have to attempt to redeem myself as an expert next year... but still had one more race to finish.

Race 2 for me was the C Superbike race. I was 8 points behind 2nd place and 19 points out of first. They would both have to DNF and I would have to win the race in order to get that championship. There was even more competition and more bar banging in this race. I got a better start - went into turn 1 in 5th and hung onto the front pack as the top 4 guys went at it. We entered the high speed kink (about 140mph) and the guy in first ran out of track and went off. He was going at a good rate and about to cross right over the track in turn 12 as I was entering it. I backed off, giving the leader a good 3-4 second lead. I figured a loss of 4 seconds was better than getting T-boned! I put my head down and closed the gap a bit going down the straight, but then going into 1 the bike was just all over the place. I was very uncomfortable on it and rather frustrated so I backed off. I had nothing to gain in that race and everything to loose by crashing. I have the GNF coming up and need to do well and have my bike and myself in 1 functional piece. I started to make it a fun race practicing dragging my knee allll the way around the carosel and seeing how far I could power wheelie down the straight from the bump out of 13 (not very far at all! lol). I finshed 5th just cruising around (ran about a second slower than my first race, but I was still 2 seconds slower all weekend than I was at the last round where I ran 1:10.5. It is 95% suspension and 5% mental for once.

Overall, it was an okay weekend. I didn't get the finish I needed to win my Novice 600 Championship, but I finished off the season never laying my bike down and not getting hurt in any way. A 2nd in the C Superstock class in 3 regions is OK with me. Now I need to focus on the GNF. I plan on being in top-shape phsycially mentally, and now with the help of a bunch of people including Markbilt Race Bikes, Cannoli, Mike, Ben, John, Luie, Scott, Kaz and so many others I should be on top of my game and competetive in my C Superstock and Superbike classes!

Sponsorship for the WERA Grand National Finals!

September 21, 2009

I am currently searching for any help I can get in competing in the Grand National Finals in Road Atlanta in 3 weeks! I am currently leading C Superstock for the Mid-Atlantic Region and I am 4 points behind first (in 2nd place) for C Superstock Northeast. I am also leading the Womens Superstock for both the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. If anyone can help me get to the track and race I will not disappoint! All I need is gas money to get there, entry fees, and a set of tires! I can be reached via E-mail at Katie785@gmail.com. Thank You!!!

Summit Point - Another adventure

September 19-20, 2009

Quick recap of the results:

  • MW Solo: DNF - Mechanical
  • CSb: 4th place
  • CSS: 2nd place - it was a battle from lap 1

Saturday

Saturday was another adventure, as always. I planned on getting to registration right when it opened, taking my wheels to get new tires on and then heading out for the first 8:30AM practice - I was group 1. I took my wheels over to Pirelli, they said they'd have them done very quickly, and they did! I went up to registration, but they could not find my pre entry. I could not race without that money that I had already sent in, so I was a little upset. Luckily, I had my laptop and the E-mail confirming that it was received so we were able to figure something out. I spent a total of one and a half hours in registration, and unfortuntely completely missed my first practice. I JUST made my last practice and headed up for some play time. I got a feel for the bike and came in so I wouldnt destroy the tires. For the MW Solo I was gridded up first row right. Turn one is a right-hander, so I would have the outside line. I got the holeshot and lead through turn 1 and 2 when Dale passed me. The bike was bouncing quite a bit coming out of turn 1, but I managed to stay on Dale's tail. In lap 2, I saw someone come up the inside of me in turn 1. No matter how much I closed the gap, they just kept coming and got by me in 1. I still had those 2 in my sights, and was ensuring there was no gap, but it seemed as though they were really pulling on me on the straight, even though i kept getting a better drive out of turn 10. Red flag on the 3rd lap and restart. I was first off the line again, but quickly got passed by everyone in the pack going into turn 1. I knew something was wrong with my bike. I put my hand up so I wouldnt get hit by the rest of the guys behind me and closed the throttle a bit. Coming out of turn 1 the bike felt fine again - no smoke or anything so I got back into race mode. Coming out of 3, I had no power again, so I pitted in. We couldnt figure out what was wrong and I had a feeling that Drew didn't believe me when I said something was not right with the bike. He pulled it apart and sure enough the throttle cable had broken under the tank and the broken piece was jamming against the cam as I was trying to open the throttle. There were enough threads left on the broken part to still use the cable as we didn't have another, so Drew fixed it for me and I was good to go for Sunday's sprints.

Sunday's Sprints

The first race was OK. I got the holeshot, lead through turns 1-2 and then Dale passed me in 3. I tried to match his pace but the back end was going kind of nuts. It was hopping really bad on downshifts and braking and boucing on the gas. Everything was going just fine and I was cruising in third place, closing in on 1st and 2nd place when I heard another bike. I put my head down and started to rail harder. In turn 6 I grabbed an upshift while cranked over. I must not have given a hard enough input, becuase before I knew it my bike hit a false nuetral and then popped back into 2nd, almost high-siding me to the moon! I hit the tank HARD with my chest and it knocked the wind out of me for a bit. I let the bike settle and caught my breath for about a second and John went under me. There was one lap left and I knew I had to make my move. I closed up on the 1-2 second gap he had on me and was ON his rear tire. I went to make my move in 10, but the rear slipped a bit and I had to modulate the throttle to keep it from stepping out. We crossed the line and had no idea who actually got 3rd. The results posted said that John got it by 0.01 of a second. I came in to see that the right side of the rear tire was competely shredded - a suspension issue as the pressure was dead on. I quickly took the wheel off, and took it to Pirelli to be flipped so the better side was not on the right as Summit is mostly a right-hand track.

The next race was the women's superstock and no one else raced it. Uneventful, but a "win."

And now onto the big one - C (600) SuperStock... This is the championship I am going for and this is the one I have a really good shot at keeping. Before the race, i was 8 points being Garrett for first in Mid Atlantic region and 1 point behind Dale for first in the Northeast region. I got the holeshot again and lead the race until turn 3, where Dale got by me, but I didnt let him go anywhere.. I followed him for 1 lap, actually dragging my brakes in the apex of every turn to avoid hitting him. I learned all of his weaknesses in 1 lap and oddly enough, they were also my strengths. I passed Dale in the 2nd lap in turn 6-7, which is actually a double apex turn. I went up the inside of him as he drifted out and couldnt help but to giggle while I did it as I knew he would never expect it there. He came back around me on the exit of turn 1 and I got him back again in turn 4, which is a high-speed right that he actually crashed and hit a wall in last year. I knew it would be playing a major mental game with him going through there. We did about the same thing until the last lap where he tried to block my pass in 4, but that didn't work. I still got around him. I thought I was home-free and put my head down to really check out, but he got around me between 8 and 9, which is where I never expected him to get me. He gets a better drive out of 9 and I had to really work to catch him in 10, where i tried to go up the inside, but he closed the door and I had to check up. I knew his bike was faster than mine and on the straight I had no chance. I was so focused on just giving it full throttle that I hit the rev limiter at the line and finished 0.4 seconds behind him in second place. I was pretty bummed as I really thought I had that race. All year Dale and I have been going back and forth like that and I finally thought it had stuck. I cam in and sure enough, both sides of the tire were now shredded and destroyed even with the adjustments I made.

Overall, the weekend was successful. I was able to work out the throttle issues Saturday and be in somewhat working condition for Sunday (minus the suspension that we are still trying to dial in). I believe that I am now leading the C Superstock for the Mid Atlantic region, Dale being 1 point behind me. Im not sure where Garrett finished but I know he didn get 3rd or 4th and that puts me ahead of him in points. I am going to Nelson. My race angel has once again stepped forward and he, along with another new race angel are making this happen for me. I am also going to try my best to get down to The Grand National Finals to see if I can put in some good laps there. I was there with NESBA to practice for 3 days in July and have a good feel for the track now, less the chicane that NESBA doesnt run. I am interested to see how I size up to the competition down there this year if I can come up with the financial ability to get there and enter some races. Wish me luck!!

BeaveRun - Day 2

September 6, 2009

Sunday went much better than Saturday - I did some of both practices, and played around with turn 10 and turn 1. I was struggling in turn 10 because normally on my bike I shift down to 2nd and at the second apex i grab another shift into 3rd, then before turn 11 (a kink) I shift up into 4th and/or 5th depending on my drive... With Drew's bike not having a slipper, I was struggling to get the bike settled going into T10 in 2nd. I had never ridden a bike without a slipper clutch at all, something I found that had actually given me a lack of needing to learn true clutch control. The tires on the bike in practice were pretty bad and they were stepping out quite a few times during each lap - a bit too much for my liking, so i just did a few starts and planned on just giving up that second I was loosing in 10 using 3rd gear only. It's uphill, so being a gear too high is rather painful - it completely bogs the bike down...

On to the racing! I only could afford one race due to my poor performance in the solo - I rely on that payout to pay for Sunday's sprints - normally a second place pays for both races, but 4th.. Not So Much.. SO I raced C Superstock - the one that I was leading. It was an interesting day as Drew and My races were back to back. He was race 3 and i was race 4 - he got his best finish of the year, coming in 4th after an epic battle that made me stand by the fence and watch while I got ready. Drew came in all giddy and handed the bike off to me. We made some yellow plates with Trackwraps material that we had and it worked out well because we changed them back and forth about 12 times over the weekend and they were sticky each time and came off with no goo!

WIth the Honda having much more bottom end, it was really easy to start. I was pole on the grid and got the holeshot! I shifted to 2nd gear with the quick shifter and the front wheel lofted for about 100 feet! I felt like a superstar going into tturn 1 first and just out of a wheelie! Garrett attempted to pass me out the outside of 1, but I didn't let that happen. He showed me a wheel in 5 - Denied! He then showed me a wheel in 10 and i didnt let him get me on the entry, but he went around me on the exit, being as though the bike was bogged down in 3rd gear. I stuck right with him and Dale got us both in a pass that made me scream "Heck yeah, Dale!" in my helmet! Dale didn't pass us too close, but I dont think Garrett was expecting it and he almost checked up on turn in. I almost got around him in turn 2 because of that, but he closed the door. We were all really close for a few laps and Garrett kept going into turn 10 what looked like wayyy too hot so I went under him on the entry. We went back and forth quite a few times during the race, and Dale got about 5 seconds ahead... I didn't see Garrett for about 4 laps, but I knew he was going to try on the last lap in turn 10 so I took a different line. Sure enough, he showed me a wheel, but couldnt get by with my altered line. We crossed the finish line 5 seconds behind Dale, and Garrett .4 seconds behind me. It was a fun fun race and being as though I was on Drew's bike, which I had never ridden before the weekend, and being as though it's an 05 and behind a bit on technology, i was ecstatic! I think I surprized us both! We celebrated at Permani Brothers, a place outside Pittsburg that Drew had been begging me to go all year.... I have to thank Dale, Scott Nelson, Edmond (Cannoli), and Ron Peril for their hospitality. We slept in Dale's trailer, had some amazing food by Cannoli - as always, got some of Scott and Bonnie's Smores around their fire, and Ron brought Drew;s bike and tires! It couldn't have happened without them!!

Another Adventure to BeaveRun

September 5-6, 2009

Our trip up to BeaveRun has started out as quite the adventure, as it always seems to be. We got 30 minutes into the trip, stopped to fill up the van with deisel, went to start it and it would not turn over.. seems to have a probem with the glow plug controller. Luckily, my mom gets my AAA service every year and we were able to get the van towed home. We put as much as would fit in the car (the thing is really smaller than it looks) and headed on out. We could not take my bike as we had no way to get it there, but Drew's bike was already at the track so we were planning on both racing that. Should be interesting considering our races are back to back... My car is an older Audi with too many miles on it, and i never know what is going to happen next. Three hours into the trip, we hit traffic - somewhere around Fredericksburg. The car starts to over heat and we pull over. I called my brother, who replaced a fuse the last time it over heated (the fan fuse) and asked him where it was - under the battery. So we take off the 2 covers to get to the fuse box and the entire thing looks like it had a small electrical fire and melted quite a bit. We search where ever we were for the larger 30 amp fuses it needed and finally, after 40 minutes and 5 or so stops, we find a walmart that has them. Replaced the fuses, hoping that the box isnt too melted and off on our way again. We left the office at 2PM and got to the track around 12:30AM... not too bad; it's normally a 7 hour drive - all the shenanigans only cost us 3 hours...

Saturday - Practice and the Solo

Saturday morning's practice was interesting. The first session I was rather slow, just getting used to the bike, how it revs, shifts, turns, exits, brakes... I found the suspension to be stiffer than I had imagined it would be. We aren't making any changes as between the races there just won't be time. The second practice went better, I got in my groove a little more and made better reference points. The solo was interesting - I got a great start! I went into turn 1 in third, almost got Dale on the outside of 1 ( I started in the 3rd row and he started in the 1st), but he held his ground. I was in 3rd for a few laps and then I heard a bike behind me. I stepped up my game, but John still got by me into 1. I was comfortable behind him and it was a long race, so I didn't push it and held back behind him. I was now in 4th. The guy in 2nd was holding up John quite a bit and he finally got by him. I went to get who was now in 3rd on the inside of turn 7, but he swooped over and closed the door. I almost Tboned him, and grabbed a handful of brake, pushing me wide. John and Dale had taken off a bit. Justin was behind me now and kept showing me a wheel, but i held him off for a few laps. I can't remember where he actually passed me - going into 1 I think. I was making too many mistakes on Drew's bike and backed off because I knew we both really needed it for Sunday. I was a bit upset because I also needed a good finish to even pay for entry fees for Sunday... I got by 4th place and finished in 4th. Not bad - enough to sign up for one race on Sunday - C Superstock. Practice starts in 10 minutes!!! Wish me luck!

Opened My T-Shirt Shop!

With the few weeks we have had off in between rounds, I was able to finalize some of my T Shirt designs. They are on sale at Cafe Press now! For each sale, a percentage is donated towards my 2010 race season! Thank You for the support!!

WERA Cycle Jam 2009: VIR

August 6, 2009

Well, Cycle Jam is finally here! I have been looking forward to this weekend for awhile... it's likely the biggest event we'll do all year as it's a National and 3 regional rounds combined. We rolled in late last night, so sleep is minimal, but it's just practice today so it's okay.. My schedule for the weekend is:

  • Thursday - Practice
  • Friday - Endurance
  • Saturday - Regionals: C Superstock, C Superbike

Day 1: Practice

Practice was short-lived. I went out for the first session on the superbike, even though it was wet, because I knew I needed a good amount of time on it to get my new reference and shift points down. It was definetly slick, and I thought the track was drying as I was out there, but I was wrong. I came into 1 and very smoothly began to get on the gas as i exited the turn, but to my surprise i was sliding down the track. I looked up to see the bike slide off the turn and kick up a bunch of mudd. I realized that I was about to hit the dirt too, so i tucked in my arms tight so I wouldnt get hurt when i started to tumlble. I rolled about 40 feet off the track and got up, running to the wall and out of the crash zone. It was an easy, small crash and I"m actually rather glad that I had my first small crash. It made me realize that it's not going to hurt every time I find the edge. I got back out for one more session, but my times at 1:39s were off where I wanted to be.

Day 2: Endurance

The endurance race was hot! It was about 96 degrees out so I hyrdrated like crazy to make sure I woudn't get too fatigued out there. I was the 2nd of 3 people in a 4 hour race and we were all trying to do about 1 hour 15 min the first stint. Marcus, the first team member made it for 1:10.. I got on for my stint, took my time, and was runnign very consistent 1:41s-1:42s for an hour. I saw the hour board and started to count laps. I knew if I did 10 more I would be okay and it made the time go faster. I came in, we did a good pit stop, and Bobby Kim was off for the 3rd stint. It was about 1:15 in and he came back - I hopped on for another 30 min and on the last lap blocked 5th place from coming around me in turn 14. I knew where we stood in the race and luckily enough for me, their bikes are a very unique shade of baby blue so I saw him as he attempted the pass. The race was my first endurance and I really enjoyed it. There were a lot of big names out there running in other classes like Wood, Bostrom, Hayes, Paris, Ulrich, Disalvo etc... It was insane to be passed by them with such a speed difference as I was riding an SV and they were on 600s. I learned some really good lines and brought that over into my races the next day.

While I was doing the Endurance race, Drew pulled the forks off my bike and gave them to Penske to rebuild. They did a great job and got them done quickly. Drew then reinstalled them and I was good to go for Saturday's races.

Day 3: Regionals

The regional races were the ones I was looking forward to the most. I am currently leading C Superstock for the NE region and I'm in 3rd for C superbike, so I needed to do well to defend that. The first race was Superstock. I was on my personal bike, which has some sketchy brakes and a new clutch that I am getting used to, so I knew the start would be interesting. The flag dropped and off we were. I got into turn 1 in third, but 2nd place lost control and almost went off track. The Penske forks felt amazing and while that guy was doing his thing, I went up the inside of him as he tried to regain control and just as I was almost past him I felt a hard crash. He hit my entire left side... it knocked me off my line a bit, but no one got by, so I stayed in it and kept going. I stayed in 2nd place for about a half lap, until Dale passed me. I knew he would be coming up from the row behind me. I tried to hold onto him as he pulled me around in practice and I knew where his weak spots were. We crested the hill in 7 and just as I got on the gas, the rear wheel spun. This was lap 1 on a tire that I thought was good. Earlier in the day, I took my wheel to the vendor to be changed and another team had ended up taking my wheel, which looks completely different, and put it on their bike, using my good race tire. Drew hunted my wheel down and talked to the guys. They said I could use their tire, which I was a little iffy about as it's difficult to look at that particular type of tire and know exactly how many heat cycles were really in it.... So as I spun, Dale crept away from me. I was hoping it was just a 1 time thing, but sure enough I entered turn 1 and spun on the exit. I was really upset as now I had a minimal chance of catching up and I was worrying about getting caught and finishing below 3rd. I held my ground and 1st and 2nd got away, but I finished 3rd.
My next race was the superbike race. I was on Sternsi's bike, which has a lot of upgrades from mine on top of being a year newer. His clutch is completely different than mine, but I did a few practice starts earlier and found that I just need to give it more gas. I got a decent start, went into turn 1 third, but Dale and Garrett got together a bit and I got boxed in, coming out in 4th or 5th. I got passed again into turn 3, but that just made me mad. Everyone was getting held up by 2nd place and Dale, who was in first, took off. I battled with 5th and 4th for the first 3 laps. At about lap 4, 4th place's knee pucked shattered in turn 17b and there was debris hitting me through the entire exit. I made my pass on him on the exit, and got 4th place in the kink and into 1, now getting back up to 3rd. I instantly started going 2 seconds faster a lap, running 1:35.5s but had no chance of catching back up to 1st and 2nd who were running 33s and had gained a ton of ground while I was battling with 4th and 5th.
It was a great weekend overall... I had my first small crash, managed to run some 1:35s when my previous best was 1:39s.... had some really good battles and just good, fun, racing. I could not have done it with the help of Drew in the pits.. not sure what I would have done without him, JLS behind the scenes - my race angel, Sternsi for letting me use his Superbike, Penske for making my stock forks AMAZING, Trackwraps, Galfer, Arai, and WERA.

WERA National - Summit Point

August 1, 2009

Summit was wet. Very wet all morning. I was the only one to go out for the first practice, which was interesting because I had NO idea where i was with speed. I entered 3 races: 600 Superstock, 600 Superbike, and 750 Superbike. I have to take a moment and thank my good friend Mark Stern, who let me use his superbike R6 for Summit and VIR. This bike is amazing and to just have the chance to ride something like it is more than I could ask for... The first race was race 2. It was still really wet, so I was on rain tires. We took off and I had a pretty good lead. I won that race. It was my first rain race and it was easier than I thought - I was about 12 seconds slower, running 30s when I normally run 18s at Summit. The next race was borderline between wet and dry and I really had a tough time deciding on tires. I talked to an expert that just came in from anther race and he told me that it was time for dry tires. I got on Sternsi's R6 and gridded up. I took off on the start and though I had a good lead, so I cruised around a bit. That was huge mistake as on the last lap I got passed and had no time to recover. I finished 2nd. For the next race, I learned my lesso, I still wasn't on pace, but I had a huge lead so I checked out and stayed a good 40 seconds ahead. I won that race as well. I was excited that the first national weekend of the year, I was able to get two 1sts and a 2nd. Had I been smarter, I could have easily gotten all 3 wins, but I learned my lesson.

WERA Round 6: BeaveRun Raceway

June 21, 2009

BeaveRun started out iffy, but ended well. We rolled in late Friday, set up, and went to sleep. Crazy rain storms made for some interesting sleeping, but I woke up Saturday morning rested and ready to ride. It rained most of the morning, but the forecast was calling for dry weather for the afternoon. I didn't want to go out in a wet practice and have to change tires to rains then back to DOTS, so I waited the first practice out. The second practice came around and it was still drizzling, but I hadn't been to beaver since Aug 08 and I needed at least a few sighting laps in, so i went out for 3 laps on my SuperCorsas. It was slick to say the least, but I was able to get some reference points down and get a feel for the track again. My best time last year was not great at a 105.1. The winning novices last year were running 1:00-1:01s, so I needed to drop alot of time to be competitive.

The MW Solo race came up quick and before I knew it, I was heading out for the warm up lap. The track was partialy dry, but there was a river of about 2" of standing water running across turn 2, through turn 4, and several rivers running across the backstraight right between the 2 high speed kinks. The warm up lap was sketchy and I slide both tires through 2-4. I gridded up, watched the started intently, and took off with the holeshot. I let off too soon for turn 1 and Dale beat me into it. He was very gutsy going through the water on slicks and almost lost both tires every lap. I got passed for second a few laps in and was keeping up great with both Dale and 2nd place. The guy in 2nd went wide in turn 10 and opportunity knocked for me to take the inside line and get ahead of him. The pass stuck and I went into turn 1 catching Dale and watching him to figure out where I was going to makemy move, but we rounded turn 4 and it was a red flag. I put my hand up and looked back, but 3rd place wasnt there. I didn't pass him too closely, so I knew whatever happened wasnt because I spooked him. They cleaned up the wrecked quicky and luckily no one was hurt. We re-gridded and again I got the holeshot and again Dale beat me into 1. I kept hitting false neutrals going into turn 10 and it dawned on me that I couldn't reach my shifter without pulling my entire leg up and getting my foot off the peg. Dale got away from me and I just relaxed for the rest of the race. It wasn't worth the risk of crashing and the immense tire wear to try and chase him down at that point. There was NO ONE anywhere near me, so I finished a comfortable 2nd.
The next race was the "Adult Scooter Race." It was a blast! We had a LeMans start, so we had to run across the track, start the scooters up, and go. I rode Scott Nelson's Zuma 50 (THANKS SCOTT!!!). Dale was my "mechanic," so he held the scooter so it didn't have to be on the center stand while i started it. He pushed me halfway through the start and I went into turn 1 in 2nd, behind my Fiance, Drew Harbuck!! It was great. I got killed in turn 2 by guys who had faster bikes, but I had my eyes only set on Drew. I have never competed directly against him because he's an expert so I was super excited. We went up the hill in turn 5 and I didn't think the Zuma was going to make it, but i kept it pinned and crested the hill, getting a great drive through the kink. I passed Drew as close as possible and on the HORN!! It was great! I ended up finishing 7th of 19! It was a great time!! I got onboard video of the whole 3 lap race (which took 10 mins!!). It's hilarious so make sure you watch it!

Sunday I got 2 good practice sessions in and picked up the pace a bit. I was getting more comfortable out there and started to get a rythm down. The first race was C Superbike. I got a great start, but got killed entering turn 1. I went into turn 2 in 7th. I quickly passed back for 6th and moved up to 5th in the second kink. I was struggling to get around 5th place and had severl moments where I would go for it and he would swoop in front of me and i had to hit the brakes to avoid T-boning him. I was getting very frustrated because I just couldn't get any of my passes to stick and my rear was sliding through turn 4, 5, and 10... I ended up 5th in that race and immediately got a new SuperCorsa when I came in.
The next race was C Superstock. I had alot more confidence with the new rear and I was ready to go! I got the holeshot and lead the race until turn 5, where I got passed. I then got passing coming down the hill, but I was able to pass back hanging onto second. Dale was now leading and I was in 2nd. I followed Dale the entire race, trying to pass in several places, but he would go into every turn great and exit great, so I was struggling again to get by him. I almost had him in turn 5 and should have just stuffed him, but he cut inside and I backed off the gas for a split second. I ended up finishing 2nd and missing first place by 0.11 of a second!! I managed to get a 1:01.1, which wasn't where I wanted to be, but I know where to pick up speed for the next round there in September. I got it all on video, so be sure to check that out! Special thanks to Drew Harbuck(who doubled as My Mechanic as well as a top 5 Expert competitor! I'm learning more and more that no matter what, he's ALWAYS there for me and I can really count on him when I need him), Pirelli, Shoei, Galfer, TrackWraps, and Vortex for helping me throughout the Entire weekend.

WERA Round 5: Nelson Ledges

June 13-14, 2009

Nelson Nelson Nelson... We arrived late Friday night after a half work day and 10 hour drive. It was cold and we did't bring a heater (my mistake), so I froze all night and barely slept at all. I got up and my neck was killing me from laying on the cold air mattress all night, but it was beautiful out and I was ready to ride.

Saturday

Practice didn't go as well as I had planned at first. My suspension was very stiff and the track felt even more bumpy than normal. I adjusted it and went out for a 2nd practice. It was going in the right direction, but felt a little too soft, so I made one more adjustment and went out for 3 laps to test it and I felt that with the stock suspension, this was the best it was going to get. I knew it would start to get frothy towards the middle of the solo, so I left it just a touch off of where i wanted it.

The Middle Weight Solo was my only race Sat and I really wanted the win. I was gridded first row right of 3, but the middle guy ended up being a mistake, so it was just Dale on the the left and myself on the right. The green flag dropped and I got the holeshot. I held onto first and got a good gap going for about 6 laps. Then I heard someone coming.. It turned out to be Garrett and he got around me. I didn't mind that he was ahead as it was easier on my mind to follow someone and less pressure. I noted all the places I could pass him in the future and attempted a few, but just couldn't stick it. Then Dale got us both on the same lap. So it was now Dale in first, Garrett in second and myself in third. I pushed hard to get around Garrett and managed to do so going into the kink on the last lap. I tried to get Dale, and showed him a wheel a few times but just couldnt get around him. Turn 12 I knew was my weak point, so i hugged the inside and wouldn't let Garrett by. I saw him attempting to come around me on the outside, so I closed in and blocked him. I crossed the line 3 tenths of a second behind Dale and took 2nd. My fastest lap was a 1:11.4 and I was happy with that. My previous best was a 1:12.5 at the last round.

Sunday Sunday Sunday!!

I knew Sunday would be a challenge. I flipped my rear tire, as it's the same set that I ran at Summit and the right side was getting rather worn. There were 3 other guys running about the same speed as me, including Ryan Jones, Dale and a guy from the North Central Region that I didn't know. For the first race, C Superstock, we were combined with the Expert CSS too. I knew it would hurt me trying to get through the tail end of those guys, but I was ready to go out there and do what I needed to do to get through the pack. Wave 1 of the experts went and I wound up the bike, ready to launch. The green flag flew and off we were into turn 1. I got a great start and went into turn 1 in 2nd. I wouldn't let Ryan get away from me at all and even found some spots where I would gain on him and then some where he would pull on me. We were going well until the 3rd lap when we got into those experts. They were running about a second slower than us, but Nelson is narrow and it was very tough passing. While we were both trying to find a way around one of them, Dale caught up and passed me then got around the expert within a few turns. Jones got around the expert, then I finaly did. They weren't too far ahead, so i put my head down and caught them. Then more experts, more getting held up, and more battling. Dale passed Ryan, Ryan passed Dale, and they were 2 wide through every turn. I couldn't find a way to get in there and I ended up finishing 3rd.

The C Superbike was next and we were combined with the HW Twins. I was gridded up row 3 right. I got a pretty bad start and went into turn 1 in 8th or so. I went around some guys on the outside, so did Dale, and he almost ran me off the track. I had to check up so he didn't hit my front wheel as he exited turn 2. We both passed a few more and as we entered turn 4, someone low sided and I had to swerve to dodge a bike and rider rolling across track. I was in 4th now. I held onto the top 3 and made my move for 3rd. Dale and Ryan battled the whole race and yet again I would come up on them fast, even almost hit them a few times, but I absolutely need to work on my passing and I coudn't get by them. I finished 3rd, but managed to get the best lap time of the novice 600s for the weekend with a 1:10.5.

Overall, it was a great weekend. I dropped 2 full seconds from the last round there (1 month ago) and got podiums all weekend. I just need to figure out what I'm going to do to get new tires for BeaveRun this upcoming weekend ( 3 rounds in a row is kiling me financially!!) and I'll be good to go.

WERA NorthEast Sportsman Series Round 4: Summit Point

June 5-6, 2009

Back at Summit point! Oddly enough, Summit seems to be my best track this year. I haven't spent too much track day time there, but I love it and know it very well. We rolled in mid-day on Friday hoping to get some last minute practice in, but it had rained all day Thursday and Friday and I didn't feel like getting my stuff out and getting it all wet for 40 min of practice, so I just waited til Saturday morning. Saturday's practice went well. The first session was slick, so I went out for 3 laps and warmed up my body. I decided it wasn't worth burning up all the gas for nothing so I came in and waited until the second practice to get moving. The track was at abou 70% for the second practice, but I managed to get down to 1:21s, which used to be my normal race pace. I was pretty excited to be able to do that in a slippery practice and feel completely comfortable doing so.
Saturday's race was the Middle Weight Solo - a 16 lap race for cash. I put on my 2nd set of fresh tires for the year, and they ROCKED!! I picked up a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsas from IMR and they felt amazing! I had to do well to be able to pay for entry for the next round, so the flag dropped and i screamed into turn 1 in 2nd. I wouldn't let first place get more than 3 feet away from me and I was able to pass him going into turn 10 and then take off. I had about a 19 second lead and just passed the halfway flag when i saw a red flag go up. Ugh. I knew it would go back a lap, start at lap 7 and restart entirely. I just kept thinking that I had to do that all over again and it was upsetting. We regridded pretty quickly, 2 board, 1 board, green flag GO!! I went into turn 1 in 3rd this time, but came out 2nd by turn 3. I passed for first within the first lap and put my head down again. Entering turn 3, i grab a downshift, only this time i hit a false nuetral and coasted in. About this middle of the turn, it caught, threw me up over the bars and I quickly wobbled towards the gravel trap. I got up on my toes, let the bike settle down and got back on it. 2nd got around me, but I was able to pass him on the exit of 10. Just as we were going down the straight I saw another red flag. I knew that was it. I came in unsure of where I was the lap before... I couldnt remember if i was in front, or if 2nd was in front. I waited for the results and to my excitement, I was first!! My first win yet!! I am still ecstatic about it.
Sunday was a different sort of day. I was practice 5, so I got to sleep in a litle later than normal. Practice 2 had an unfortunate incident that delayed the day quite a bit. We went out for practice at 11:45 and would start racing at 12:00. I was race 2 and for some reason I was extremely nervous. I was able to calm myself down before I got to the grid, and I had an awesome start! I went into turn 1 in 1st, but right before the Apex 2 guys got around me. I had to stand the bike up a bit and change my line as they kind of checked each other up. They got away from me a little from that, but i put my head down and went for it. I got around 2nd on the 2nd or 3rd lap. I was chasing down first, who was now quite a bit away and i could hear someone coming up on me in 1 in the braking zone every time, but he didn't get around me. I finished 2nd, and was very happy with that. I turned around on the cool down lap to see it was Dale, one of my good friends, behind me that whole time...
The next race was C Superstock. This is the class I want to get the championship in, so it really mattered to me. The experts and novices were combined, so I knew it would be a tight turn 1. The waves were really quick - quicker than I expected. I got into turn 1 in 3rd place, and tried to hang with them, but we got mixed up with the experts and I really struggled to get around them. I got passed in turn 5 and fell back to 4th. I was faster, but the guy who passed me was all over the place and I couldnt figure out where he was going to go. Everytime I would go for it, he would swerve inside or swerve outside. Then going into 1, Dale passed me. We hit more expert guys and they got around them and I took a bit to do so, so now I was 5th and I could barely see anyone. Last lap and I caught up to Dale, but didn't get close enough to pass him. I finished 5th. I was shooting for 1st, so I was pretty bummmed out when I came in. I thought about the weekend and what I had accomplished. My goal was to get into the 19s and I managed to get into the 18s. I ran consistent 19s and was comfortable doing so. I got a 2nd, which will help me get tires again. It was overall a good weekend and we're only on round 4, so there is plenty of time for things to change.

WERA NorthEast Sportsman Series Round 3: Nelson Ledges

May 6th, 2009

Nelson is always an interesting event for me. It is the farthest track from home in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. It's about a 9 hour drive, so we try to pack up Thursday night before we leave so we can leave right from work and get as much sleep as possible. We rolled into the track at about 12AM, set up our tent and tried to sleep. It was muddy, very muddy, but that made it kinda fun. I don't mind getting a little dirty every now and then. Sleeping Friday night was rough. It was colder than expected and we didn't set up the heater, so I pretty much froze all night. Woke up bright and early and teched in. It was smooth, as always and I was able to say hi to all the people I hadn't seen from the last round.
Practice was damp and cold. I headed out for some sighting laps as I had not been to Nelson in over a year. The track came back to me quickly and I got my lines and reference points worked out sooner than I expected. Now, onto suspension.
Financial limitations cause me to remain on a stock suspension, so I am getting as much as I possibly can from it. It was pretty close at Summit and stopped tearing tires with a few clicks of compression. Nelson is a very bumpy surface and take a little more finess to get it right. I made some adjustments, went out for practice 2, and it felt okay - just needed to soften up the compression a bit more. I did that and headed out for my first and only race for Saturday: MiddleWeight Solo.
I got a great start and held onto 4th place for about 3 laps, but I felt like I was fighting the bike everywhere and it was only getting worse. I came into turn 12 kinda hot and just started to get on the brakes when I felt the forks bottom out and around came the rear end. It sent me into one heck of a tank slapper, but I recovered and kept fighting. The same thing happene the next lap and the next lap and I was loosing time and positions because of it. After too many close calls, I called it a race and came in. The solo is not a race for points and it was likely that if it kept going the way it was, I might not have kept the bike on 2 wheels. It was sad for me, as I have never come in early from a race, even with a mechanical last year, i milked my bike through the rest of the race and finished, but sometimes those decisions have to be made.
Sunday is the big race day. Sprint for points. Joe from Joe's Garage Racing helped me get my bike dialed in correctly and it honestly felt like a completely new bike. I never knew suspension could really make that big of a difference. Bumps that were there on Saturday had suddently disappeared and the bike was going where I was telling it to. It was great.
My first race was the Women's Superstock and I won that - I was the only entry again. It's sad racing by myself, but until more girls come out, it's what I'm going to have to do. My second race was the C SuperStock race. This I was 2nd in points for and I wanted it bad. I didn't get a very good start and I was 7th or so going into turn 1. I just didn't push through like I needed. I made a few passes, got passed a few times and wound up 6th, which put me down into 4th place for points overall. My last race was C Superbike. I wasn't doing as well in points as the CSS, but I was still in 8th - top 10 wasn't too bad for me. I got an okay start and went into turn 1 in 5th. The first lap I dodged Andrew, who went off in the kink, then in turn 13 I saw Frank on the side of the track jumping up and down for us to watch out. His bike was dead center in the race line, parts scattered everywhere. We all made it through safely and I thought for sure it would be a red flag, but nothing ever came out. We all came through 13 very cautiously as it's almost blind and we didn't know what to expect, but Frank's bike was gone. Just a few parts everywhere to watch out for. I got stuck behind a group of 3 that were battling the entire race. They kept checking eachother up and kept going through pretty much every turn 3 wide. I had no where to go. I just sat back and watched them battle it out. I finished 6th, which bumped me up to 6th in points for the championship too. Not bad. Overall, it was a learning weekend. I need to get better starts. I need to be more aggressive, I need to ask for help with my suspension when I need it. Next round is Summit Point with WERA, but first a few practice days with NESBA at VIR and Road Atlanta.
